Detailed description of Chlamydia Test components

Chlamydia

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the bacteria Chlamydia trachomatis.  It is the most common sexually transmitted disease in the United States.  Infections are easily spread because it often causes no symptoms and the disease may be unknowingly passed to sexual partners.  It is estimated that 75% of infections in women and 50% of infections in men are without symptoms.

Sexually active individuals and individuals with multiple partners are at highest risk.  Untreated Chlamydia can lead to pelvic infection and infertility.

Only approximately 30% of women will have symptoms due to Chlamydia, hence screening of sexually active women for Chlamydia is necessary to diagnose and treat asymptomatic women in order to decrease the risk of developing complications.  Women who do have symptoms may note vaginal discharge, burning while urinating or abdominal pain.

Symptoms Include

While many symptoms are not usually apparent, when they do occur it is usually within 1-3 weeks of contact and can include the following.

Men - Burning sensation during urination, discharge from the penis, testicular tenderness or pain, rectal discharge or pain.

Women - Vaginal discharge, burning sensation during urination, painful sexual intercourse, symptoms of PID, salpingitis, perihepatitis (liver inflammation similar to hepatitis) (see individual diseases for symptoms), rectal pain or discharge.

What happens if I don't get tested?

If you do not get tested for Chlamydia, you run the risk of several health problems.

Men - Chlamydia can cause a condition called nongonococcal urethritis (NGU), an infection of the urethra, epididymitis, an infection of the epididymis or proctitis, an inflammation of the rectum.

Women - Untreated Chlamydia infections in women can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease which can cause scarring of the fallopian tubes and result in infertility.

KwikMed Chlamydia Testing

This Chlamydia test is performed with a urine specimen NOT a swab.  The test uses nucleic acid amplification to detect the presence of the bacterium.  The nucleic acid amplification test has been proven to be more accurate than the swab test.
