Detailed description of Gonorrhea Test components

Gonorrhea

Gonorrhea, commonly known as "the clap" or "the drip", is a common infectious disease.  It is estimated that there are more than 700,000 new cases of gonorrhea every year.  The disease can be spread through the mouth, vagina, penis or anus.  The infection spreads easily and occurs most often in people that have many sex partners.  Some people may be infected with gonorrhea but not show any symptoms.  When symptoms do occur, they typically occur within 2-10 days after exposure, but can take up to 30 days.

Symptoms Include

Men - Burning and pain while urinating, increased urinary frequency or urgency, discharge from the penis, red or swollen opening of the penis, tender or swollen testicles and sore throat.

Women - Vaginal discharge, burning and pain while urinating, increased urination, sore throat, painful sexual intercourse, severe pain in lower abdomen and fever.

What causes Gonorrhea?

Gonorrhea is caused by Neisseria Gonorrhoeae, a bacterium that can grow and multiply easily in mucus membranes of the body.  Gonorrhea bacteria can grow in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus and fallopian tubes in women, and in the urethra in women and men.  The bacteria can also develop in the mouth, throat and anus.

What happens if I don't get tested?

Untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent problems in both women and men.  In women, if left untreated, the infection can cause pelvic inflammatory disease, which may damage the fallopian tubes and can even lead to infertility, and untreated gonorrhea infection could increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy, a dangerous condition for both the mother and baby.

In men, gonorrhea can cause epididymitis, a painful condition of the testicles that can sometimes lead to infertility if left untreated.  Without prompt treatment, gonorrhea can also affect the prostate and can lead to scarring inside the urethra, making urination difficult.

Gonorrhea can spread to the blood or joints.  This condition can be life-threatening.  Also, people with gonorrhea can more easily contract HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

KwikMed Gonorrhea Testing

This Gonorrhea test is performed with a urine specimen, a swab is NOT needed.  The test uses nucleic acid amplification to detect the presence of the bacterium.  The nucleic acid amplification test has been proven to be more accurate than the swab test.
