Amphetamines

Methamphetamines are a stimulant drug that is highly addictive.  Some of the street names include meth, speed and chalk.  This drug can be smoked, inhaled, injected or taken by mouth.  Some adverse effects of Methamphetamines include irregular heartbeat, increased blood pressure and a variety of psychological problems.

 

Barbiturates

Barbiturates are a depressant which are known to cause relaxation and sleepiness.  Prolonged exposure to barbiturate drugs can cause memory loss, changes in alertness, irritability and decreased interpersonal functioning.  Overdosing is life threatening.

 

Benzodiazepines

This is a family of depressants that can be used therapeutically to relieve anxiety, produce sedations, induce sleep and relieve muscle spasms.  Some of the common drugs in this family include Xanax and Valium.  Repeated use can cause amnesia, hostility, irritability and physical dependence.  Abuse is common among heroin and cocaine users.  Abuse can be life threatening.  Versions of benzodiazepines include what is commonly known as "roofies" or the "date rape" drug.

 

Cannabinoids (marijuana)

Marijuana is a mix of the parts of the cannabis sativa plant.  It is the most commonly abused drug in the United States.  People either smoke it as a cigarette or smoke it through a pipe.  Abuse can lead to memory loss, difficulties in learning and irregular social behavior.

 

Cocaine Metabolite

Cocaine is a powerful and highly addictive drug that stimulates the brain.  People take the drug through inhaling or injections into their veins.  Some of the serious health issues that can result from Cocaine use include heart problems, respiratory failure, strokes and digestive problems.  Any of the related health problems can be fatal.

 

Opiates

Opiate drugs include heroin, morphine, codeine, oxycontin and others.  Opiates are a substance found in the seedpod of the poppy plant.  Heroin can be snorted, smoked or injected.  Heroin abuse leads to heart infections, miscarriages and death.  Regular use leads to tolerance of the drugs which causes user to take increasingly large doses of the drug.

 

Phencyclidine (PCP)

PCP is a hallucinogenic that contains nitrogen and is classified as an alkaloid.  The effects of PCP are highly variable due to the significant amount of variation in the active compounds.  It is usually snorted, smoked or ingested.  PCP causes people to see images, hear sounds and feel sensations that appear to them to be real but are in fact not.  PCP can increase blood pressure and pulse rate and can cause seizures, comas and death (which is typically caused by an accidental injury or suicide during PCP intoxication).
