Detailed description of Herpes Test components

Herpes Simplex Test

Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV).  Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) usually causes oral herpes.  Symptoms of (HSV-1) include cold sores or fever blisters.  Historically, HSV-1 was not known to cause genital herpes, but that is changing as people begin to have sexual relations at a young age.

Type-2 (HSV-2) usually causes genital herpes.  When the disease is active, it travels to the surface of the infected area and begins to copy itself, this process is called shedding.  While the person is shedding, the virus can rub off onto another person.  After the shedding occurs, the virus travels down the nerve and becomes dormant.  Some people have (HVS-2) but do not show any symptoms.

Who gets genital herpes?

It is estimated that 1/5th of the U.S. population over the age of 12 is infected with the HSV-2 virus, but up to 90% are unaware they are infected. One in four women compared with one in five men are infected with genital herpes.

How is herpes spread?

HSV-1 is usually passed from person to person by kissing.  HSV-1 can also be spread from the mouth to genitals during oral sex.  If this occurs, HSV-1 may lead to genital herpes.

HSV-2 is most often passed by vaginal sex and anal sex.  But just as HSV-1 can infect the genitals and cause genital herpes, HSV-2 may pass from one person's genitals to another person's mouth, resulting in oral herpes.

Symptoms Include:

Mouth sores, genital lesions, blisters or ulcers (most often on the mouth, lips and gums or genitals), fever blisters, fever (especially during the first episode), enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin.  Many people with HSV never have any symptoms or they mistake the symptoms for some other skin irritation like insect bites, ingrown hairs or pimples.

KwikMed Herpes Testing

KwikMed tests both IGM and IGG.

IGM

This herpes test is utilized for early detection of the herpes virus.  The IGM test is used anytime there has been sexual contact within the last six weeks.

IGG

The IGG test is the standard herpes test that will not only detect the presence of the virus, but also determine which type of infection is present.  This test is used if there has not been any sexual contact in the last 6 weeks.

Having both the IGG and IGM tests performed together is the most effective way to determine if there is an infection present.
