What does a Fertility test do?
This test evaluates your pituitary function with regards to fertility issues.

How is the test performed?

FSH, Serum
FSH stands for follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This hormone is released by the anterior pituitary gland. Your doctor may order this test if you have signs of certain reproductive or pituitary disorders.

In men, FSH stimulates the testes to produce mature sperm and helps produce certain proteins.  FSH levels are typically consistent in men after puberty.  High levels of FSH in men indicates primary testicular failure, typically due to irregular growth or injury.  Low levels of FSH indicate pituitary or hypothalamic disorder.

Normal Results: Before puberty: 0-5.0 IU/L*
Normal Results: During puberty: 0.3-10.0 IU/L
Normal Results: Adult: 1.5-12.4 IU/L
 

Luteinizing Hormone (LH)

This test evaluates your pituitary function in terms of fertility issues.  Men order this test if they have fertility issues.

In men, the LH stimulates the production of testosterone.  Luteinizing Hormone levels in men are typically constant after puberty.  High levels of LH in men can indicate testicular failure. Low levels of LH indicate pituitary or hypothalamic disorders.

Normal Results:  7 to 24 (IU/L)
