What is Low-Ogestrel®?

Low-Ogestrel® is a combination birth control pill that contains ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel. Low-Ogestrel® is a prescription medication that is used most commonly for the prevention of pregnancy. This form of contraception is very effective when used exactly as prescribed. Low-Ogestrel® contains 28 pills in a pack. There are 21 pills which contain the active hormones and 7 place-holder, reminder pills. While these do not contain the active ingredients, they are important because they serve as reminders to take the pill at the same time each day.

For most women, oral hormonal contraceptives are very safe, hence their widespread popularity. There are certain women however who may have an unsafe reaction to the medication. Women who are older than 35 and smoke are at an increased risk of suffering from a stroke or from blood clots. Both of these conditions can be life threatening. Women who are breastfeeding, pregnant or have just given birth are also not good candidates for the medication. Oral contraceptives are available by prescription only and should never be obtained without one. KwikMed orders are reviewed and approved when deemed medically appropriate by licensed physicians.

When the medical consultation is filled out, a licensed KwikMed physician can review your medical history, medications and individual situation to assure that it will be safe for you to take these oral contraceptives. Combination birth control pills like Low-Ogestrel® work by preventing ovulation, thickening cervical mucus and making slight changes to the uterine lining.

Online Consultation - there is no fee for this consultation

How to Take Low-Ogestrel®

Low-Ogestrel® is a prescription oral birth control intended for use in pregnancy prevention as well as menstrual cycle regulation. It is a combination hormone pill, meaning it contains estrogen and progestin. It works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. This oral medication should be taken at the same time each day (within a 24 hour period). There are 28 pills in each pack with 7 inactive pills that serve as place holders to remind you to take your pill at the same time each day even during your period. If you are just beginning on this medication, you can either begin taking it on the first day of your period or the Sunday following the first day of your period. If you begin taking it on the first day of your period, there is no need for a backup method. If you begin on the Sunday start, use a backup method of birth control for the first 7 days to ensure the medication has been given adequate time to begin working.

Side Effects

The most common side effects associated with Low-Ogestrel® are vomiting, nausea, stomach bloating and cramping, vaginal irritation, an increase in vaginal fluids, breast tenderness or enlargement. Periods may be abnormal in the first two months of use. If any side effect remains or worsens, you should speak with your doctor.

Precautions

Women who smoke (especially those over the age of 35) are at an increased risk for developing heart related problems including heart attack, stroke and blood clots. If you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients in this medication, speak to your doctor. Those with certain medical conditions may not be able to take this medication, so it is important to discuss all medical history with a doctor. For a full list of precautions, speak with your pharmacist and doctor. Low-Ogestrel® does not protect against HIV or any other sexually transmitted diseases or infections.

Drug Interactions

Certain medications and herbal supplements may change the effectiveness of this birth control. For this reason it is important to discuss all medications (both over-the-counter and prescription) that you are taking prior to starting on the pill. Some medications are known to have negative interactions with Low-Ogestrel®. Speak with your doctor and pharmacist to rule out a potentially harmful drug interaction.

Missed Dose

Anytime you miss a dose of birth control, your chances of becoming pregnant increases. If you have forgotten to take one dose, take the missed pill as soon as possible. This will mean you will be taking two doses in one day which is fine in this instance. If this is the only pill you have missed, there is no need for a backup method of birth control at this time. For any additional pills which are missed, speak with your doctor or pharmacist to get your schedule back on track. Missing more than one dose may require use of a backup method of birth control to prevent pregnancy.

Additional Information for Missed Doses
