What is Microgestin Fe®?
For women who are not ready to start a family, or do not wish to continue to have additional children, birth control pills are highly effective in preventing unplanned pregnancy when taken according to the prescribing information. Microgestin Fe® is used for this purpose and may be used for several other conditions as well. The most common of these include irregular periods, heavy menstrual cycles with pain and excessive bleeding and uterine cysts.
This medication contains 28 pills which are to be taken each day at the same time (every 24 hours).
Microgestin Fe® combines estrogen and progestin to help prevent pregnancy. Combination birth control pills work in several ways. First, they prevent the ovary from releasing an egg (ovulation). Secondly, they enable slight changes in the body. Cervical mucus is thickened which makes it harder for sperm to make its way to the uterus to fertilize an egg. If the sperm does in fact make it to the egg (if it is released from the ovary), there are changes in the uterine wall that make it harder for the fertilized egg to implant and it is passed through the body without attaching. Through these safe guards, combination pills are highly effective in pregnancy prevention. If pills are missed, efficacy rates decline. If you do miss a pill, it's important to check with your prescribing information contained with the medication so that you can get back on schedule. It may be necessary for a back up method of birth control (non-hormonal) to be utilized for a period of time to prevent pregnancy.

How to Take Microgestin Fe®
Microgestin Fe® is a prescription oral birth control intended for use in pregnancy prevention as well as menstrual cycle regulation. It is a combination hormone pill, meaning it contains estrogen and progestin. It works by preventing the release of an egg from the ovaries. This oral medication should be taken at the same time each day (within a 24 hour period) without regard to meals. There are 28 pills in each pack with 7 inactive pills that serve as place holders to remind you to take your pill at the same time each day even during your period. If you are just beginning on this medication, you can either begin taking it on the first day of your period or the Sunday following the first day of your period. If you begin taking it on the first day of your period, there is no need for a backup method. If you begin on the Sunday start, use a backup method of birth control for the first 7 days to ensure the medication has been given adequate time to begin working.
The most common side effects associated with Microgestin Fe® are vomiting, nausea, stomach bloating and cramping, vaginal irritation, an increase in vaginal fluids, breast tenderness or enlargement. Periods may be abnormal in the first two months of use. If any side effect remains or worsens, you should speak with your doctor.
Women who smoke (especially those over the age of 35) are at an increased risk for developing heart related problems including heart attack, stroke and blood clots. If you have a known allergy to any of the ingredients in this medication, speak to your doctor. Those with certain medical conditions may not be able to take this medication, so it is important to discuss all medical history with a doctor. For a full list of precautions, speak with your pharmacist and doctor. Microgestin Fe® does not protect against HIV or any other sexually transmitted diseases or infections.
There are certain drugs that may interact with birth control pills, making them less effective in preventing pregnancy or causing an increase in breakthrough bleeding. These drugs include but are not limited to medications treating epilepsy, some HIV meds and certain antibiotics. The herbal supplement St. John's Wort has also been associated with breakthrough bleeding and decreased birth control coverage. Be sure to disclose all medication (over-the-counter, prescription, vitamins and herbal supplements) you are currently taking with your healthcare providers before starting on any birth control pill.
Anytime you miss a dose of birth control, your chances of becoming pregnant increases. If you have forgotten to take one dose, take the missed pill as soon as possible. This will mean you will be taking two doses in one day which is fine in this instance. If this is the only pill you have missed, there is no need for a backup method of birth control at this time. For any additional pills which are missed, speak with your doctor or pharmacist to get your schedule back on track. Missing more than one dose may require use of a backup method of birth control to prevent pregnancy.
Microgestin Fe® should be stored at room temperature (77 degrees F) and out of moisture or light. This, like any prescription medication, should be kept out of the reach of children.
Microgestin Fe® should never be obtained without a prescription.
